Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (lit. "O heart, it is difficult") is an Indian 2016 Hindi-language musical romantic drama film directed, co-written and produced by Karan Johar. The story is based on the concept of unrequited love. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai, with Fawad Khan appearing in a supporting role. It also features cameo appearances by Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt. The film was released on 28 October 2016 during the Diwali festival. Made with a budget of ₹68 crore (US$9.8 million), Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was critically and commercially successful, grossing over ₹237.56 crore (US$34 million) worldwide. It received positive to mixed reviews, with high praise directed towards its soundtrack and Kapoor's performance , but criticized for its length. The film became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2016 and Kapoor's first commercial success since his 2013 romantic comedy film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. It received seven nominations at the 62nd Filmfare Awards, including Best Director (Johar), Best Actor (Kapoor) and Best Actress for Sharma, winning four of them for its soundtrack.
